Hollywood「聖林」
「聖林（Hollywood）」は、現在の「ハリウッド」を漢字で表す、どこか神秘的な響きを持つ表記です。実は「聖林」は、単なる発音の当て字ではありません。英語の holly（セイヨウヒイラギ）を holy（聖なる）と取り違え、「holy＝聖」「wood＝林」と訳したことから生まれた表記とされています。
「聖林」と書けば、まるで「聖なる森」という意味に感じられますが、そこには外国語を漢字で理解しようとした、昔の日本人のユニークな発想が表れています。現在のハリウッドはロサンゼルスの一地区で、世界的な映画の都として知られています。
私はこの「聖林」という二文字に、日本人が西洋文化を漢字で受け止めた遊び心と、映画の街ハリウッドの華やかさを重ね、力強い筆づかいで表現しました。
Hollywood “Seirin”
“聖林-Seirin (Hollywood)” is a kanji representation of what is now known as “Hollywood,” a term with a somewhat mysterious ring to it. In fact, “Seirin” is not merely a phonetic transcription. It is said to have originated from a misunderstanding of the English word “holly” (the European holly plant), which was mistaken for “holy” (sacred), leading to the translation “holy = sacred” and “wood = forest.”
While writing “聖林” might seem to mean “sacred forest,” it actually reflects the unique creativity of the Japanese people in the past, who sought to understand foreign languages through the lens of kanji. Today, Hollywood is a district of Los Angeles, known as the global capital of cinema.
