(Paris)
“巴里 (Paris)” is a kanji spelling of “Paris” that was once used in Japan. While the katakana spelling “パリ” is now standard, the kanji spelling “巴里” appeared as early as the late Edo period. In 1826, the work *Yochishiryo* by the Dutch scholar Aochi Rinsō recorded the name as “把理斯 (Paris),” reflecting the widespread practice at the time of transcribing foreign place names using the on’yomi readings of kanji. During the Meiji period, various spellings emerged, such as “巴理斯” and “巴里斯,” and among them, “巴里” gradually became established. Paris is known worldwide as a capital of culture and the arts. By writing its name powerfully in traditional Japanese kanji, we have expressed the beauty of the encounter between the two cultures of France and Japan.
