The word “taiko”(太鼓) is composed of “tai,”(太) which denotes thickness or size, and “ko,” (鼓)which refers to a musical instrument made of stretched leather that is struck to produce sound. In Japan, taiko drums have been used since ancient times in a variety of contexts, including festivals, Shinto rituals, court music, Noh, and Kabuki. During the Nara period, they evolved alongside music introduced from the continent, and at regional festivals, the sound of the taiko plays a vital role in bringing people together. It is also said that during the Warring States period, the sound of the taiko was used on the battlefield to rally soldiers.
In this work, I envisioned the powerful resonance of the taiko and the dynamism of the drummers, and I completed it in one swift stroke with vigorous brushwork. I hope you will sense the passion and vitality that breathe life into Japan’s traditional culture through the variations in ink density and the bold lines.
