“Teikin” is a traditional Japanese kanji term for the violin. The character “提” refers to holding something in one’s hand, while “琴” means a stringed instrument; together, they evoke the image of a performer holding the instrument against their shoulder or chin while playing. During the Meiji era, as Western music spread throughout Japan, the term “teikin” came into use and appeared in literary works and music education. Although “violin” is the standard term today, “Teikin” embodies the history of Japan’s embrace of Western culture and its efforts to express it in its own unique language.
In this work, I envisioned the tension of the moment when the bow glides across the strings and the dynamic resonance of the sound spreading through space, and I executed it in a single, powerful stroke with a flowing brush. It is a calligraphy artwork brimming with vitality that allows viewers to sense the encounter between Japanese kanji culture and Western music.
