「風琴」— Organ(オルガン)
Fūkin” — Organ
“Fūkin” is a traditional Japanese term for the organ, an instrument that produces sound through the flow of air. The character “fū” (wind) symbolizes the power of air that creates sound, while “kin” (harp) symbolizes an instrument that produces beautiful tones. During the Meiji era, when music was incorporated into Japanese school education, the organ spread throughout the country as an accompaniment instrument for school songs. In 1887, Torakusu Yamaha took on the challenge of domestic production after being commissioned to repair an imported organ at an elementary school in Hamamatsu. Through trial and error and the study of music theory, he laid the foundation for the history that would lead to today’s Yamaha.
For this piece, I imagined the flow of wind and the sound filling the space, and completed it in one swift stroke with dynamic brushwork. It is a powerful calligraphy artwork that allows viewers to sense the encounter between Japanese musical culture and Western instruments.
