Tennis
“Teikyū”(庭球) is a Japanese-specific kanji term for what is now known as tennis. “Tei” refers to an outdoor court, and “kyū” means ball; it is a truly charming name reminiscent of the English term “Lawn Tennis” (tennis played on grass). Around 1894, around the same time that “baseball” was translated as “yakyū,” “lawn tennis” was also translated as “teikyū” and began to spread throughout Japan. In 1898, Japan’s first intercollegiate “Teikyū” match was held between the Higher Normal School and the Higher Commercial School. Since imported rackets were expensive at the time, a unique Japanese tennis culture developed, featuring rackets made by bending wood and rubber balls. In the two characters “庭球,” I sense the history of modern Japan embracing Western culture and nurturing a new sport into its own cultural tradition. Through the dynamic flow of my brushstrokes, I sought to express both the vitality of tennis and the beauty of Japanese culture.
