作品説明
London「
(London)” is the kanji spelling of “London” that was once used in Japan.
“倫敦” is not a kanji chosen for its meaning, but rather a phonetic transcription (ateji) that represents the sound of “London” using kanji. In Japan, there is a custom of writing foreign place names in kanji, and “倫” (ron) and “敦” (don) were chosen for their similarity to the sounds of “London,” resulting in the spelling “倫敦.” During the Meiji period, this kanji spelling for foreign place names was actually in use; Natsume Sōseki also employed this spelling in his work *The Tower of London*, which is based on his stay in London. Although the katakana spelling “ロンドン” is now standard, these two characters, “倫敦,” retain echoes of the era when modern Japan was embracing Western culture. I have rendered these historic kanji with bold brushstrokes, infusing my work with the resonance of the name “倫敦,” which has long served as a bridge between Japan and the United Kingdom.
