作品説明
New York「
“Nyuyoku (New York)”
“Nyuyoku (New York)” is a charming, old-style Japanese kanji spelling that is rarely used today. It is a phonetic loanword that originated in an era when it was customary to represent foreign place names using kanji. A well-known theory suggests that it was derived from the Chinese term for New York, “紐約,” with the character “約” replaced by “育” to match the Japanese pronunciation.
The character “紐” represents the sound of “New,” and “育” represents the sound of “York”; these are not kanji that translate the actual meaning of the word. “紐育” was used in old newspapers and literary works, and it remains known today as a beautiful, old-fashioned way to write the city’s name.
In these characters, I sense the wisdom and curiosity of our ancestors, who expressed a distant, foreign city using their own writing system. I wrote this piece with powerful brushstrokes, imbuing it with a timeless longing for a foreign land that connects Japan and New York.
