作品説明
Berlin「
(Berlin)” is the kanji spelling of Berlin that was once used in Japan. It is an “ateji” (a kanji spelling chosen for its sound) used to represent foreign place names; the character “伯” was used to represent a sound close to “Ber,” and “林” was used to represent a sound close to “Lin.” While the katakana spelling “Berlin” is common in Japan today, it was not uncommon during the Meiji and Taisho periods to write foreign place names using kanji. In fact, the 1873 record of the Iwakura Mission, *A True Account of the Tour of the United States and Europe*, also refers to the city as “伯林.” The mission visited Berlin, where they had an audience with the emperor and toured universities, factories, and museums.
In these two characters, “伯林,” I sense the spirit of Meiji-era Japan, which sought to learn from Western civilization and apply those lessons to Japan’s modernization. I wrote this historic kanji spelling with bold brushstrokes to express the intellectual depth and historical significance of Berlin, the capital of Germany.
