“Hyōkyū”(氷球) — Ice Hockey
“Hyōkyū” is the Japanese kanji name for ice hockey. The character “氷” (ice) refers to the fact that the sport is played on ice, while “球” (ball) refers to the fact that it is a ball game in which players hit a puck with sticks. The interesting thing about this name is that, in reality, the game uses a hard rubber disc called a “puck” rather than a ball. Ice hockey was introduced to Japan around Taishō 10 (1921), and the name “Hyōkyū” is recorded in the 1930 *Dictionary of Modern Terms*. It is said that even the Kyoto University Ice Hockey Club, founded in 1934, referred to the sport as “Hyōkyū” or “Ice Hockey.”
In the two characters “氷球,” I sense the sheer power of ice hockey—players gliding at high speeds across the cold ice and colliding fiercely with one another. As a kanji expression unique to Japan, I have infused my brushstrokes with that very power.
