「蹴球」は、現在のサッカーを表す日本の伝統的な漢字表現です。「蹴」は足で蹴ること、「球」はボールを意味し、その名の通り「球を蹴る競技」を表しています。日本では明治時代に西洋のフットボールが伝わると、当初は「フートボール」などと呼ばれていましたが、やがて「蹴球」という名称が広まりました。1921年に設立された日本初のサッカー統括団体も「大日本蹴球協会」と名乗り、現在の日本サッカー協会へとつながっています。私は「蹴球」の二文字に、足でボールを蹴るという競技の本質と、日本サッカーが歩んできた100年以上の歴史を込め、一筆一筆、力強く書き上げました。*
Shūkyū (蹴球) — Soccer
“Shūkyū” （蹴球）is a traditional Japanese kanji term for what is now known as soccer. “Shū” (蹴) means “to kick” with the foot, and “kyū” (球) means “ball”; as the name suggests, it refers to “the sport of kicking a ball.” When Western-style football was introduced to Japan during the Meiji era, it was initially called “football” and similar terms, but eventually the name “Shūkyū” became widespread. Japan’s first soccer governing body, established in 1921, was named the “Greater Japan Soccer Association,” which is the predecessor of today’s Japan Football Association. I wrote the two characters for “蹴球” with great vigor, stroke by stroke, imbuing them with the essence of the sport—kicking the ball with one’s feet—and the more than 100-year history of Japanese soccer.
