「籠球（ろうきゅう）」は、バスケットボールを表す日本の美しい漢字表現です。「籠」はバスケット、つまり「かご」を意味し、「球」はボールを表します。1891年、アメリカでジェームズ・ネイスミスが考案した当初、ゴールには桃を入れる籠が使われていました。この「籠に球を投げ入れる」という競技の特徴が、そのまま「籠球」という名前につながっています。日本では大正から昭和初期にかけて広まり、1930年には「大日本バスケットボール協会」が設立され、翌年には機関誌『籠球』も創刊されました。私はこの二文字に、一つの籠を目指して球を放つ、バスケットボールの原点と躍動感を込め、力強く書き上げました。**

“Rōkyū”（籠球） is a beautiful Japanese kanji term for basketball. “Rō” means “basket,” and “kyū” means “ball.” When James Naismith invented the game in the United States in 1891, a basket used for holding peaches was originally used as the goal. This characteristic of the sport—“throwing a ball into a basket”—directly inspired the name “Rōkyū.” The sport spread throughout Japan from the Taishō era through the early Shōwa era. In 1930, the “Greater Japan Basketball Association” was established, and the following year, its official journal, *Rōkyū*, was launched. I wrote these two characters with great vigor, imbuing them with the essence of basketball—the act of shooting the ball toward a single basket—and its dynamic energy.**
