The word “Yakyu” (baseball:野球)has a history unique to Japan.
In the late 19th century, when baseball was introduced to Japan from the United States, the Japanese at that time referred to this new sport as “baseball.” Later, it is said that Chūman Kanae, an educator of the Meiji era, coined the term “Yakyu” as a Japanese expression for the sport.
The character “野” (no) refers to a meadow or open field, while “球” (kyu) means ball. In other words, the very characters that make up “yakyu” convey the image of a sport where one hits and chases a ball across an open field.
In these two characters, I sense the history of how sports introduced from overseas took root in Japan as a unique part of its culture. I have expressed the powerful “野” and the dynamic “球” through traditional calligraphy. I hope you will enjoy this artwork as a piece that evokes the history of Japanese culture and sports.
