作品説明
Rome「
(Rome)” is a traditional kanji spelling for Rome that has been in use since ancient times. “羅馬” does not represent “Rome” based on the literal meaning of the kanji characters themselves; rather, it is a spelling that became established as an “ateji” (a kanji loanword) used to represent foreign place names by borrowing the sounds of the kanji. In Japan, there has been a custom of writing Western place names and personal names in kanji since before the modern era, and “羅馬” is a prime example of this. During the Meiji era, there were even books, such as *A Brief History of Rome* (*羅馬史略*), that used “羅馬” in their titles. Furthermore, it is still listed in KanjiPedia today as “羅馬 = Rome.”
In these two characters, “羅馬,” I see both the grand history stretching from ancient Rome to the present day and echoes of the era when Japan first began to learn about Western culture. By writing them with bold, powerful strokes, I sought to convey the presence of Rome, a city with a long history.
