作品説明
Athens「
(Athens)” is the kanji spelling of “Athens” that was once used in Japan.
It is an example of “ateji”—the practice of representing foreign place names using the phonetic sounds of kanji—and before the current katakana spelling became standard, various foreign place names were written using kanji. “雅典” can be found in documents from the Meiji period; in 1877, Nakai Sakushu, who had traveled abroad, left behind a Chinese-style poem in which he referred to Athens as “雅典国.” In it, he viewed Athens as the “source of European literature” and expressed his deep admiration for ancient ruins such as the Parthenon.
The character “雅” conveys the meanings of “elegance” and “refinement,” while “典” signifies “model” and “ancient texts.” I superimposed the intelligence and beauty of ancient Greek civilization, as well as Athens as the source of Western culture, onto these two characters and expressed them with powerful brushstrokes.
