桑港（San Francisco）
「桑港」は、サンフランシスコを表す歴史ある漢字表記です。もともとは「桑方西斯哥（そうほうせいしすこ）」という音訳があり、そこから「桑」の字を取り、さらに港町であることから「港」を組み合わせて「桑港」と呼ばれるようになったとされています。19世紀の日本では、外国の都市名を漢字で表すことが珍しくなく、「桑港」もその一つとして定着しました。福澤諭吉の『福翁自伝』にも「桑港」の表記が登場します。私はこの二文字に、太平洋を越えて多くの人々が行き交った港町の歴史と、異国への憧れを込めて、一筆一筆心を込めて書き上げました。

Kuwako (San Francisco)
“Kuwako” is a historic kanji spelling for San Francisco. It is said to have originated from the phonetic transcription “Sōhō Seishisuko”; the character “Kuwako” was derived from this, and since it is a port city, the character “ko” (port) was added to form “Kuwako.” In 19th-century Japan, it was not uncommon to represent the names of foreign cities using Chinese characters, and “桑港” became established as one such name. The term “桑港” also appears in Yukichi Fukuzawa’s *Fukuō Jiden* (Autobiography of Fukuō). I wrote these two characters stroke by stroke with all my heart, imbuing them with the history of this port city through which so many people traveled across the Pacific, as well as a longing for foreign lands.
