羅府（Rafu）— Los Angeles
「羅府」は、ロサンゼルスを表す日本独自の美しい漢字表記です。1894年、ロサンゼルス在住の日本人・船橋茂七が、当時の中国語表記から「羅」の字を取り、「府」を添えて「羅府」としたと伝えられています。以来、日系人社会で親しまれ、1903年創刊の日本語新聞「羅府新報」にもその名が残っています。現在では「ロサンゼルス」の歴史的な呼び名として辞書にも収録されています。私はこの二文字に、海を越えて築かれた日系コミュニティの歴史と、遠い故郷を想う人々の記憶を込めて、一筆一筆心を込めて書き上げました。
Rafu — Los Angeles
“羅府Rafu” is a beautiful, unique Japanese kanji representation of Los Angeles. It is said that in 1894, Shichiro Funabashi, a Japanese resident of Los Angeles, took the character “羅” from the Chinese name used at the time and added “府” to create “Rafu.” Since then, the name has been cherished within the Japanese-American community, and its legacy lives on in the Japanese-language newspaper *Rafu Shinpo*, which was first published in 1903. Today, it is listed in dictionaries as a historical name for “Los Angeles.” I wrote these two characters stroke by stroke with all my heart, imbuing them with the history of the Japanese-American community built across the ocean and the memories of those who long for their distant homeland.
