「華盛頓（かせいとん／ワシントン）」は、英語の Washington の音を漢字で表した、中国語由来の当て字です。漢字そのものの意味を翻訳したものではなく、「ワシントン」という発音に近づけるために「華・盛・頓」の音が選ばれました。
日本でも近代にはこの表記が使われ、福澤諭吉の『福翁自伝』にも「華盛頓」という表記が登場します。現在は主に「ワシントン」とカタカナで書きますが、華盛頓には、東アジアが西洋の都市名を漢字で受け入れていた時代の歴史が刻まれています。私はその響きと歴史の面白さを、力強い筆致で一枚の書に表現しました。

“Washington” (Kaseiton/Washington) is a loanword of Chinese origin, representing the pronunciation of the English word “Washington” using kanji. It is not a translation of the meanings of the kanji themselves; rather, the sounds “華,” “盛,” and ‘頓’ were chosen to approximate the pronunciation of “Washington.”
This spelling was also used in Japan during the modern era, and the term “華盛頓” appears in Fukuzawa Yukichi’s *Fukuō Jiden* (Autobiography of Fukuzawa). While it is now primarily written as “ワシントン” in katakana, “華盛頓” embodies the history of an era when East Asia adopted Western city names using kanji. I have expressed the fascination of its sound and history in a single calligraphy piece with powerful brushstrokes.
