「風」は、日本文化の中で“目に見えない力”を象徴する特別な存在です。 自然の動きを捉えようとした日本人の感性が息づいています。 精神性や美意識を象徴する言葉として広く使われるようになります。 平安時代には「風雅」「風流」といった語が生まれ、風は“美しいものを感じ取る心”を表すようになりました。俳句や和歌では、季節の風がしばしば人生や心情の象徴として詠まれ、風は日本人の感性を映す重要なモチーフとなります。 また、武士の時代には「風林火山」の“風”が掲げられ、俊敏さ・自由・変化への強さを象徴しました。神道では、風は「風の神（風神）」として祀られ、五穀豊穣をもたらす力として尊ばれています。風鈴や扇子など、風を感じる道具が日本文化に深く根付いているのも、風が人々の暮らしと精神に寄り添ってきたあかしです。 神奈川の湘南海岸を散歩していた時の海風が、浮世絵師・葛飾北斎の「神奈川沖浪裏」のイメージと重なり一気に書き上げました。 In Japanese culture, “wind” is a special entity that symbolizes an “invisible force.” It embodies the Japanese sensibility that sought to capture the movements of nature. It came to be widely used as a term symbolizing spirituality and aesthetic sensibility. During the Heian period, terms such as “fuga” (elegance) and “furyu” (refined taste) emerged, and the wind came to represent “a heart that perceives beauty.” In haiku and waka poetry, seasonal winds are often celebrated as symbols of life and emotion, making the wind a crucial motif that reflects the Japanese sensibility. Furthermore, during the samurai era, the “wind” in the phrase “Fūrin Kazan” (Wind, Forest, Fire, Mountain) was upheld as a symbol of agility, freedom, and resilience in the face of change. In Shinto, the wind is enshrined as the “God of the Wind” (Fūjin) and revered as a force that brings bountiful harvests of the five grains. The fact that objects that allow one to feel the wind—such as wind chimes and folding fans—are deeply rooted in Japanese culture is a testament to how the wind has been an integral part of people’s daily lives and spiritual world. While taking a walk along the Shonan coast in Kanagawa, the sea breeze reminded me of Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e print *The Great Wave off Kanagawa*, and I finished this painting in one go.
