本作《宇宙論―回転する円》は、「絵画とは何か」「額縁とは何か」という根源的な問いを、宇宙論的視点から実験的に展開した作品です。
186.2×144cmの板作品に、アクリル絵具とレディメイド、さらに額縁そのものをコラージュとして内部に組み込むという構造が採られています。
作品の内部に配置された額縁の中には円形のモチーフがあり、それは実際に回転可能です。
観る者は円を自由に回し、自ら選んだ角度で作品と向き合うことができます。
固定された正解や視点を拒み、「どこから観るか」「どう観るか」を鑑賞者に委ねる構造は、宇宙に上下が存在しないという思想とも重なります。
甲斐哲哉自身が「果たして絵になるのかと思いながら描き進めた」と語るように、本作は完成形を最初から定めず、生成そのものを内包した作品です。
天地創造を思わせる混沌と秩序のあわいで、絵画・物質・時間・鑑賞行為が一体化しています。
1964年、甲斐哲哉は世界初のボディペインティングを発表し、その前衛的な身体表現は米国の世界的写真誌 LIFE に特集され、国際的評価を確立しました。
身体という「個」から出発した表現は、やがて宇宙・意識・存在そのものへと拡張され、本作では鑑賞者の行為そのものが作品の一部となっています。
《宇宙論―回転する円》は、絵画を「完成した物」ではなく、常に生成し続ける宇宙的プロセスとして提示する、極めて思想性の高い一作です。

Created in 2008, Cosmology – The Rotating Circle is an experimental work that questions the very definition of painting and framing.
Acrylic on wood panel is combined with readymade elements, including an actual frame collaged within the artwork itself.
Inside the embedded frame is a circular element that can be physically rotated by the viewer.
By allowing free rotation, the work rejects a fixed viewpoint and invites the viewer to choose their own orientation—echoing a universe without absolute up or down.
Kai has described the process as one in which he questioned whether it could truly become a painting at all.
The result is a work that evokes a sense of creation itself, where order and chaos coexist.
Kai pioneered the world’s first Body Painting in 1964 and was featured in LIFE magazine (USA).
From bodily expression, his work expanded toward cosmology and consciousness.
In this piece, the act of viewing becomes part of the artwork, transforming the viewer into an active participant.
