本作《宇宙への探査》は、横幅約259cmに及ぶ細長い画面構成によって、スペースシャトルが切り離される一瞬を象徴的に捉えた作品です。
人類が地球という重力圏を離れ、未知の宇宙へ踏み出すその刹那を、抽象的かつ詩的に描いています。
キャンバスに描かれた浮遊感のある形象と、レディメイド要素の導入は、制御と偶然、計画と逸脱という二つの力が交錯する状態を生み出しています。
それは科学技術の到達点であると同時に、人類がなお不確かな存在であることを示す象徴でもあります。
甲斐哲哉の宇宙論的表現は、宇宙を「征服する対象」としてではなく、人間の意識や存在を映し返す鏡として捉えています。
本作における「切り離し」は、機体の分離であると同時に、地上の価値観や既知の世界からの精神的な分離をも意味しています。
1964年、甲斐哲哉は世界初のボディペインティングを発表し、その前衛的な身体表現は米国の世界的写真誌 LIFE に特集され、国際的評価を確立しました。
身体という「個」から出発した表現は、やがて宇宙・意識・存在へと拡張され、本作《宇宙への探査》はその思索が「人類の挑戦」という形で結晶した一作といえます。
それは希望か、それとも孤独への第一歩か。
本作は、その問いを明確な答えとしてではなく、観る者自身の感覚に委ねる形で提示しています。

Created in 2008, Exploration into Space captures the symbolic moment when a space shuttle separates—an instant in which humanity leaves Earth’s gravity and enters the unknown.
The elongated horizontal format (258.9 cm wide) emphasizes motion, suspension, and the tension between departure and uncertainty.
Abstract floating forms combined with readymade elements create a dialogue between control and chance, precision and deviation.
The work reflects not conquest of space, but humanity’s confrontation with the unknown and with itself.
Kai pioneered the world’s first Body Painting in 1964 and was featured in LIFE magazine (USA).
From bodily expression, his work evolved toward cosmology and consciousness.
In this piece, the act of “separation” becomes both a physical and a psychological departure from the familiar world.
Rather than offering conclusions, Exploration into Space leaves the viewer suspended between hope and solitude.
