本作《宇宙論～曼荼羅》は、甲斐哲哉が長年探求してきた宇宙観と精神性が、穏やかでありながら確かな密度をもって表現された作品です。F50号（91×87cm）のキャンバスにアクリルで描かれ、画面中央には曼荼羅を想起させる円環構造と幾何学的な構成が据えられています。
柔らかな青の階調と、無数の点や線の反復は、細胞の生成、星々の循環、意識の拡張といったイメージを呼び起こします。上下左右へと静かに広がる空間構成は、個の存在がやがて宇宙的秩序へと溶け込んでいく過程を象徴し、観る者を内省へと導きます。
甲斐哲哉は1964年、世界初のボディペインティングを発表し、その革新的な身体表現は米国の世界的写真誌 LIFE に特集され、国際的評価を確立しました。身体という“個”から出発した表現は、次第に「曼荼羅」「宇宙論」へと深化していきます。
本作は、その思想的な転換と成熟を示す一作であり、強い主張や激しさではなく、調和・循環・祈りに近い静謐さを湛えています。観る者それぞれの内側にある宇宙を、静かに映し出す作品といえるでしょう。

Created in 2007, Cosmology – Mandala is a work in which Tetsuyoshi Kai’s long-standing exploration of cosmology and spirituality is expressed with calm intensity. Painted in acrylic on canvas (F50 size, 91 × 87 cm), the composition features a mandala-like circular structure and subtle geometric forms.
The soft blue gradations and the repetition of countless dots and lines evoke cellular generation, cosmic circulation, and the expansion of consciousness. The gently expanding spatial structure symbolizes the process by which individual existence dissolves into a universal order, inviting quiet contemplation.
Kai pioneered the world’s first Body Painting in 1964 and was featured in LIFE magazine (USA), establishing his international reputation as a Japanese avant-garde artist. From bodily expression, his work evolved toward Mandala and cosmology, and this piece reflects that mature transition.
Rather than forceful assertion, Cosmology – Mandala embodies harmony, circulation, and a prayer-like stillness, quietly resonating with the inner universe of each viewer.
