本作《HIROSHIMA》は、甲斐哲哉が長年探求してきた「生命」「宇宙論」「人類史」というテーマを、人類最大級の悲劇である原爆の記憶と重ね合わせ、強い問いとして提示する作品です。
M100号（162×97.2cm）の大型キャンバスにアクリルで描かれ、画面には時計の文字盤という象徴的なモチーフが組み込まれています。この時計は、単なる時間の表示ではなく、原爆投下という決定的瞬間から止まった時間、あるいは人類が刻み続けてしまった「破滅への時間」を象徴しています。
甲斐哲哉は1964年、世界初のボディペインティングを発表し、その革新的な身体表現は米国の世界的写真誌「LIFE」に特集され、国際的評価を確立しました。身体という“個”から出発した表現は、やがて「曼荼羅」「宇宙論」へと深化し、人類や文明そのものを見つめ直す視座へと拡張していきます。
《HIROSHIMA》は、その思想の延長線上にあり、「人類は原爆から逃れられるのか」という問いを、告発ではなく沈黙と祈りに近い強度で提示する重要作です。

Created in 2009, HIROSHIMA is a powerful work in which Tetsuyoshi Kai confronts the themes of life, cosmology, and human history through the memory of the atomic bomb.
Painted in acrylic on a large M100-size canvas (162 × 97.2 cm), the composition incorporates a clock dial as a central symbolic element.
This clock does not merely represent time; it signifies the moment when time stopped for humanity, or the irreversible countdown humanity began through the choice of nuclear destruction.
Kai pioneered the world’s first Body Painting in 1964, an achievement that was featured in LIFE magazine (USA), establishing his international reputation as a Japanese avant-garde artist.
From bodily expression, his work evolved toward Mandala and cosmology, expanding its scope to question civilization and existence itself.
HIROSHIMA stands on this continuum as a rare work that directly addresses human history.
Rather than accusation, it presents a silent yet profound question: Can humanity escape the shadow of the atomic bomb?
It is a work not about the past, but about the future we choose.
