From the late Edo period until before World War II, the maru obi was a highly formal obi worn as women's first formal attire. Characteristically, since it was worn for weddings and commemorative ceremonies, it often features auspicious designs like cranes and turtles or vibrant floral patterns. While modern obi have lining, maru obi are long belts over 60cm wide folded lengthwise to wear, so they must have been incredibly tight and difficult to manage. Then, to avoid compromising the design, I turned them into slightly larger tote bags. Surprisingly, they pair wonderfully with denim and wool clothing. The bag lining uses white crepe de chine.
