Setsubun Oni Rabbit – Handmade Tsumami Zaiku

To celebrate Setsubun in February, I created these Oni (demon) Rabbits using traditional Tsumami Zaiku techniques. There are two designs: A rabbit wearing an Oni mask A rabbit with fluffy hair and small Oni horns Both rabbits are holding a kanabō (a traditional demon club). Their slightly “yankee-style” tough look is the charm point! (Too cute to chase away, right?) Because of their small size, they are easy to display in compact spaces such as an entrance or shelf. Each piece is carefully handmade, one by one. I will make your item in the same style as the one shown in the photos, but please note that small differences may occur (such as eye position), making each rabbit unique. Made of fabric and glue, please avoid water to enjoy it for a long time. It marks the change of seasons and is meant to bring good luck for the new year. On this day, people throw roasted soybeans and say “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” This means “Demons out! Good fortune in!” The demon (Oni) represents bad luck and negative things, and throwing beans is believed to chase them away. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ■About Tsumami Zaikuーーー Tsumami Zaiku is a traditional Japanese craft made by folding small pieces of fabric. Each piece is handmade, carefully shaped petal by petal.
